making your own pop tarts at home can significantly reduce the amount of fat and sugar you eat.
Ingredients
- For the Low-Calorie Filling:
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- For the Dough:
- 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup cold shortening
- 2 teaspoons butter
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup non-fat yogurt
Instructions
- To make the filling: Put all the filling ingredients in a food processor and mix them well.
- To make the dough: Mix the oats, flours, shortening, and butter until you get a coarse, crumbly mixture.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the yogurt and egg together. Then, mix them with the flour mixture.
- Divide the dough into two halves and roll them out into separate sheets to form the top and bottom of the pop tarts.
- Add the filling to one side of the dough. Place the other dough sheet on top and press the edges together with your fingers to seal them.
- Avoid adding extra sugar and fat. Instead of decorating with cream, you can sprinkle a little cinnamon on top of your finished low-calorie pastries.
